Instagram Reveals New Feature To Block Abusive DM Requests

Social media has made our life more comfortable however it has also opened doors to some unwelcomed visitors that keep on sending offensive messages to us. While every social media platform has such people who keep sending undesirable and hated messages to others, Instagram is at the top due to its extreme usage.

The image-sharing application has taken many steps to prevent it, but it is not simple. Instagram DMs regularly have many messages from people that have never messaged or followed you earlier. Such hateful comments/messages only pose a threat to one’s mental health, requiring one to stop. To block such cruel DM applications, Instagram has come forward and has taken new actions.

Instagram’s blog post has revealed its plans regarding preventing such acts and how the company will be restricting people from seeing such unpopular DMs. To cater to these problems, Instagram will be filtering a list of keywords and emojis developed in collaboration with managing anti-discrimination and anti-bullying companies.

DM applications having these phrases or emojis will filter automatically. It will also be requesting offensive words from you to filter the specified words instantly. This feature is rolling out to chunks, and once you have got it, you can find the options related to it in the Privacy Settings called “Disappeared Words.”

The filter DM inquiries will show up in a separate hidden requests folder. The message text of such cruel DM will be cover, and users will only see it upon tapping on the message. Upon tapping it, you will give an option to accept, deleted, or report the DM request.

As a part of this blocking campaign, Instagram has made it hard for blocked users to contact you. When you block a user, Instagram will give you an option to block new accounts that the user creates to contact you. The platform has not explained how it will come to know if the same user has created an account, but it’s a reasonable effort.
